What are they? Why eggshells? How are they made?
Eggshell mosaics are my passion. In the summer of 1999 I was an unemployed, disillusioned graphic designer, making a rock path in my garden, when I discovered a natural talent for mosaic. Time after time, I chose the “right” rock for an empty space in my path. I was thrilled and the experimenting began – first with tile, then a search for something small and delicate, available in any color I could imagine.
Eggshells were the answer! A frantic search for recipes calling for 8 or more eggs resulted in a cache of leftover shells which, once painted, became my mosaic tesserae. Friends, neighbors and relatives helped out with thoughtful shell donations. A carton of leftover eggshells on my porch is still a common occurrence.
The shells are sterilized and brush-painted inside and out with custom-mixed oils. After they dry for a couple of weeks, they’re carefully broken into tiny pieces, stored in bins and eventually applied one by one, with tweezers and trade-secret grout, to custom-made wood blanks, mini-sculptures or metal jewelry to create each one-of-a-kind wearable mini-mosaic.
Thank you for your interest in my art. I hope that you enjoy it as much as I do.
